The veneer plaster systems have every advantage of a new drywall system with most of the benefits of a plaster system. My favorite system is Kal-kote base and kal-smooth made by National Gypsum. 1 coat products are Diamond veneer finish by USG or X-kal by national gypsum. That's still a 1 coat system and you always double coat the finish with the same material. (As long as it's applied skillfully)īe careful of people selling the 1 coat system as a 2 coat system because they double costed with the same product. If you use USG products their imperial base coat and a 50/50 mix of autoclave lime and guaging plaster will give you a beautiful finish drywall can only dream of. More coats are stronger but obviously more expensive. Once you hang the blue board you can do a 1 or 2 coat system. It handles the moisture of the plaster well and allows you to start plastering with no need for a bonder. Plasterboard looks and acts and installs the same as drywall except it has a dark blue paper and is commonly called blue board. To hang shelves you still need to hit the studs but that's no different than with drywall since hanging shelves with only drywall to support them is just asking for problems.įor new construction the modern method of plaster is a veneer plaster over plasterboard. ![]() Most people have no idea what it is anymore much less how to use it unfortunately. In old homes with traditional wood lath and plaster picture moulding was used to hang pictures so you have no need to poke holes in the walls and it has the added benefit of adding a nice trim detail and making rooms look taller imo. Plaster has changed a lot and full coat plaster, aka traditional, aka 3 coat plaster is a different animal. I've been doing plaster and drywall for 18 years now and both products have their place but for my homes I always choose plaster every time without hesitation if I plan on staying there for any length of time. That’s part of the reason why it’s also more expensive, and its also part of the reason it has been largely displaced by drywall in new construction. ![]() What? Plaster is notorious for being quite a bit more labor intensive than drywall. Plaster installation is faster - Plaster can be applied in one day, there is no need to wait for taped seams to dry like you do with drywall. Bad plaster looks shitty just like bad drywall. But I’d argue it’s a lot easier to get a good drywall job than it is a good plaster job these days. If youre comparing a shitty drywall job to a great plaster job, then yeah, it’s true. Drywall is uneven, has visible seams and is less visually appealing. Plaster adds value - Plaster is looks much better than drywall and is known for its high quality. The few rooms we have that have been drywalled stay quieter than our plaster walls. ![]() Plaster is a better sound barrier - The thicker denser properties of plaster keeps sound from passing through walls! I honestly dont find it to be more attractive, but it does have more finishing options. It can be perfectly smooth or have an infinite number of artisinal textures. Plaster is more attractive - Plaster can be painted or stained and polished to look like stone. On the flipside, its a fucking nightmare any time you need to access a wall interior, hang a curtain rod, etc. It will certainly break (we’ve done it), though it is more resilient than drywall. Plaster will withstand impacts without denting or breaking like drywall. Plaster installation dries to a hard surface in hours with no sanding required. Plaster installation is cleaner - Drywall installation requires large amounts of sanding and produces a fine white dust that gets everywhere.Plaster is a better insulator - Plaster is thicker and denser than drywall - It keeps rooms warmer in winter and cooler in summer. ![]() Plaster installation is faster - Plaster can be applied in one day, there is no need to wait for taped seams to dry like you do with drywall.Plaster adds value - Plaster is looks much better than drywall and is known for its high quality.Plaster is a better sound barrier - The thicker denser properties of plaster keeps sound from passing through walls!.Plaster is a superior fire retardant - Plaster does not burn! Drywall has paper on the outside, paper burns! Building codes in many locations require plaster to contain the spread of fire.Plaster is more versatile - Archways and curved contours are not possible with drywall.Plaster is more attractive - Plaster can be painted or stained and polished to look like stone.Plaster is more durable - Plaster walls that are 100's of years old still look great today! Plaster wont rot out and get moldy the way that drywall will.
